Explorers crossing the ocean in search of new horizons, found
a string of tropical pearls we now call Micronesia. In the
tranquil waters of the western Pacific, just north of the
equator, are 607 islands that make up the tiny independent
state. They are indeed a rare collection of cultures and biodiversity.
Splayed across 1,500 miles of ocean, they offer some of the
finest reef and wreck diving in the world. Alternately ruled
by Spain, Germany, Japan and the United States, the federation
of islands became independent in 1979. The carefree but resilient
people emerged from the destruction of World War II determined
to manage their own affairs and highlight their rich culture.
In doing so, they have created a truly delightful and varied
destination for travelers from all over the world. For the
non-diver, we can recommend excellent resort choices for the
complete vacation of white sands, relaxing accommodations
and first-rate cuisine. For
the divers, a combination of unspoiled reefs and clear water
make for unparalleled underwater photography. For the dedicated
wreck diver, an entire Japanese fleet lies at the bottom
of Truk Lagoon. Famed to Navy fliers as “the slot,”
air crews called it “iron bottom bay” because
of all the shipping sunk during the desperate struggle for
this corner of the Pacific. Their silent remains bear mute
testimony to the conflict and wait for a new generation
of underwater explorers to search out their secrets.
