Papua New Guinea is a remarkably untamed land covering the east half of the island of New Guinea, conjoining with Irian Jaya, Indonesia. It holds one of the widest varieties of true-adventure for the remote/exotic seeking traveler. Awaiting you are sights and sounds varying from swamps to jagged limestone, mud to moss forest. Tropical heat or Highland chill vary while visiting plumed, pearl-shelled villagers and prosaic hill people. You will find outrageous creatures from tiny tree kangaroos to enormous Queen Alexandra Birdwing butterflies. Underwater phenomenon beckon to the well traveled diver, for there is incredibly diverse marine life. The reefs of Papua New Guinea boast over 2,000 varieties of sea creatures. If it lives beneath tropical waters, you can likely find it here. Alternately explored, administered and ruled by the Dutch, English, Germans, and Australians. PNG achieved self rule in 1975. Today, the country is subject to the same problems facing many emerging nations, and its travel infrastructure is still in the early to middle stages of development. Even so, there are several remarkable resorts staffed by gracious, capable and welcoming people anxious to show you their remarkable country. Diving opportunities are truly spectacular with unblemished coral reefs. Attracting serious attention from the well traveled diving community. The bitter struggle for the islands during WWII left a large variety of ships, planes and other fascinating war wreckage for the dedicated wreck diver. Nature also offers the beautiful and threatening spectacles of its volcanoes decorating the harbor.
